Veterinary Business Management Association
Students who are interested in pursuing practice ownership and other leadership/management endeavors post-graduation can get involved with the Veterinary Business Management Association (VBMA). Per the National VBMA website, “The VBMA is a student-driven organization dedicated to advancing the profession through increasing business knowledge, creating networking opportunities, and empowering students to achieve their personal and professional goals. The VBMA is founded on the innovation, determination, and entrepreneurial spirit of future veterinary leaders who seek a higher level of veterinary education than what is being offered through veterinary colleges.”
Club members who attend lectures will receive credit in four pillars:
- Business Finance
- Business Operations, Management, Ownership
- Business Leadership Skills
- Career and Professional Development
Students that accumulate 4 or more credits in these educational pillars will be awarded a Business Certificate, which commemorates and expresses their pursuit of knowledge to future employers. Students who get 8 or more credits per pillar will be eligible for their Business Certificate with Honors, which they can receive upon the acceptance of their Honors Portfolio.
The Washington State University VBMA chapter hosts lectures from a variety of veterinary and business professionals, including practice owners and financial advisors. Students not interested in practice ownership can still learn about communication, leadership skills, clinic synergy, employee contracts and salary negotiation. WSU organizes many networking events that are available for VBMA members and non-members. Two of our most popular events are Business Summit in the Spring and Partners in Practice in the Fall. Both events are networking mixers created to foster relationships between students and members of the veterinary community. For veterinarians, these are opportunities to meet students who have gone above and beyond to prepare themselves for a rewarding and successful career. WSU VBMA aims to help every student, wherever they may be in their veterinary career. For example, WSU VBMA hosts an Interview and Negotiations Workshop for the third years as they start preparing for employment opportunities.
